As a concerned Nigerian, alumnus, and former student leader of the University of Abuja, I strongly condemn and reject the sudden decision to rename this great institution as Yakubu Gowon University. While General Yakubu Gowon’s contributions to nation-building are acknowledged and respected, this move is a glaring example of misplaced priorities and highlights the government’s growing and disconnect from the needs and expectations of Nigerians.
The University of Abuja is a national symbol, embodying the diversity, unity, and intellectual heritage of Nigeria. This prestigious institution not only serves the Federal Capital Territory but also stands as a beacon of education and excellence for the entire nation.
This renaming comes at a time when several policies of President Tinubu’s administration have been met with overwhelming public disapproval due to their economic and social consequences. From the removal of fuel subsidies to clannish appointments and the skyrocketing cost of living, Nigerians are struggling under the weight of these decisions. Adding a controversial decision like this, without proper consultations or input from stakeholders, further erodes public trust.
The University of Abuja is not just another federal institution; it is a national treasure, established to reflect Nigeria’s unity and diversity as the university of the nation’s capital. Renaming it undermines decades of history, pride, and identity. We saw similar public outrage in 2012, which forced the reversal of the renaming of the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University. This decision risks a repeat of that backlash.
There are better and more inclusive ways to celebrate General Yakubu Gowon’s legacy. Mr. President can honor him by establishing a Yakubu Gowon Leadership Institute focused on leadership development, peacebuilding, and national unity or by creating scholarships and programs in his name for Nigerian students to inspire future leaders. These alternatives preserve our historical institutions while celebrating Gowon’s contributions in a meaningful and unifying way.
Mr. President, this decision is tone-deaf, especially at a time when Nigerians are yearning for policies that address real challenges. It reflects misplaced priorities and deepens the growing disconnect between leadership and the citizens.
I call on fellow alumni, current students, university staff, leaders in education and governance, and all Nigerians to rise and reject this move. We must not allow our university, a symbol of national pride and intellectual heritage, to be reduced to a political token.
Let us stand together and say NO to the renaming of the University of Abuja. UniAbuja is a National Legacy, Not a Political Token!
Yours in solidarity,
