The first thing that got to my mind while beginning to write this lesson of life is—what Onitsha told Obosi,"Adi ama-ama."
meaning—in the event of
I wouldn't stop remembering the life story of the popular Igbo veteran musician–77 Okonkwo, who went for the coronation of a popular business mogul called Ekenedirichukwu Motors in mesolithic 1900s
During his performance, Chief Ekenedirichukwu Motors gave him a paper in appreciation of his awesome music,so 77–Okonkwo uused the paper to wrap and smoke some blunts.
Again, Ekendirichukwu Motors gifted 77–Okonkwo another paper, and he also used it to wrap and smoke blunt, not knowing the content of the paper.
For the third time, Ekenedirichukwu Motors gifted him, and as he was about to tear up the paper, one of his musicians who couldn’t bear the sight, rushed and collected the papers from 77–Okonkwo and asked him,"Don't you know that this is a cheque?".
I guess there was no means of recovering the two cheques 77–Okonkwo already used, but I'm sure he did regret that action throughout his lifetime,as he even confessed in a song,"that was the first day I noticed that money is now in papers"
I do not blame 77–Okonkwo as he wasn't educated and the Word says," My people perish for lack of Knowledge", even Francis Bacon will once say, "Knowledge is power" vis a vis,We only practise what we know in life.
This story teaches how important a good knowledge of our environment is to us. It is also pertinent that we also make the people who have knowledge of the students voice to represent them in the place of decision.
But, how then do we know the best choice to represent us?
By next month, the school will be having her SUG/SRA election, which will be ushering in a new cabinet, parliament and judicial system for the student union government, and over the years we've witnessed stories and events where students do not know their SUG representatives to the tune of not knowing their SUG president.
Let's not forget the saga of last year, when some popular TV's complained of not knowing our president. Yes,we've got to do something to make a change.
In leu of this, I do solemnly appeal to our present governing body,to make a law compelling the Electoral Committee in conjunction with all the Students media group to conduct a compulsory "Manifesto day".
We all agree from this story that knowledge is power, and it takes men who know the story to change our government. Then, we all must accept to hear from all the aspiring representatives their intentions for us. Let's not forget that the Latin word "Manifesto" meaning "obvious or to make public" will give the students the choice of selecting the best man to represent them, and to also know the direction of the new government.
Give the students the chance to hear the knowledge the aspirants have of the students' populace, for active and passive resistance to the oppressive tendencies of the authorities were the foundation of the students' union, and for the likes of Ladipo Solanke to be in our government, then we must allow the students to hear them yearn their passion for our votes.
Let's give the students votes a voice.
A salient observation outlined there. More ink Bro.
