NUESA EXCLUSIVE:Mother faculty appeals for equal representation opportunity
Freedom and equality are foundational values that we draw upon when envisioning a better student society. Equality of opportunity is a social ideal that combines concern with freedom and equality, and this social ideal provides a vision of how we ought to live together as students.
At first glance, the value of equality can seem to demand uniformity that seems dystopian. For instance, if everyone were forced to wear the same clothes, pursue the same hobbies, and have the same number of children, we would think this was intolerable. However, we should be careful not to reject equality entirely on this basis. Equality is still attractive if we limit its scope to some areas. For instance, equality before the law and equal rights to vote and be voted for seem to be at the heart of our convictions about how we should live together. Inequality in these areas seems as intolerable as sameness in dress, family size, or in our choice of recreational activities.
The Nuesa press notes that, in spite of the efforts made and initiatives taken in recent years to achieve equal representation of Mother faculty in the political life of this institution students union, little progress has been made in the Student Representative Assembly of the institution..
Considering that the realisation of equal opportunities for all faculties is a necessary condition for the functioning of a democratic society, the Nuesa press recommends that practical measures be taken to correct the under-representation of mother faculty in our political institution subsequent to the next SUG/SRA election.
During the last SUG/SRA election, the press gathered that out of the 23321 registered students, only 13964 students voted, and whereas faculty of science with a total of 2421 votes had 7 SRA slot, the faculty of education with a total of 2282 votes were left with just 5 SRA slot. It's so sad that with the number of students in the faculty of education and our performance in the last elections, nothing has been done to curb this disenfranchisement.
In leu of this unequal representation, we urge all necessary authorities to resolve this issue as it belittles our political life. For we know that equality means nothing unless incorporated into our institutions because until we get equality in education, we won't have an equal society.
