Must We Loose All Our Student? :The Weight of Neglect: A Plea for Action

As I sit in reflection, my mind is beset by the memories of lives lost, of dreams shattered, and of futures cut short. The University of Abuja, a University of national unity and a bastion of learning and growth, has been plagued by a series of tragic events that have left an indelible mark on the hearts of its students and staff.
The death of Simi Boyi, a 200-Level student, on that fateful night in 2017, still resonates deeply. The circumstances of her passing, a tragic consequence of a fast-moving vehicle and the absence of a safe and comfortable pedestrian crossing, are a stark reminder of the neglect that has characterized the management of our country's infrastructure.
Yes, students protested, not because of just Simi, but for countless number of victims. As at 2017, a total of 8 students have been lost at this exact Muhammad Maccido Road.
The kidnapping of lecturers in 2021 at the staff quarters, and the numerous incidents of theft and violence that have become all too common, are a testament to the inadequacy of our security systems. The lack of a functional barricade, a comfortable pedestrian bridge, and adequate street lighting has created an environment that is hostile to the very students it is meant to serve.
But it is not just the physical infrastructure that is lacking. It is the absence of a workable system, a system that prioritizes the safety, security, and well-being of its students. It is the failure of our country leaders to recognize the value of investing in the future of our young people.
As I witnessed the tragic accident that befell Comr. Lukman Mujeeb Abiodun on that fateful day,10th of July 2023 in particular, I was struck by the realization that this could have been prevented. A functional barricade, a pedestrian bridge, and adequate street lighting could have saved a life.
And so, I make a plea to our government, to our leaders, to partner with the Student Union Government to create a workable system that prioritizes the safety, security, and well-being of our students. Let us work together to build a university that is worthy of our highest aspirations.
Let us not forget the lives that have been lost, the dreams that have been shattered, and the futures that have been cut short. Let us honor their memories by working towards a brighter future, a future that is built on the principles of safety, security, and well-being.
We owe it to ourselves, to our students, and to the future of our great nation to act. Let us act with urgency, with compassion, and with a commitment to creating a better tomorrow.
