REQUEST FOR AN EMERGENCY CONGRESS MEETING TO ADDRESS THE RENAMING OF THE UNIVERSITY

I write as a concerned member of the University of Abuja Alumni Association to formally request the convening of an emergency congress meeting to discuss the recent renaming of our alma mater by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR to Yakubu Gowon University. This development has elicited significant concerns and agitations among alumni members, who feel  deeply concerned about the identity and legacy of the institution.

While the decision to rename the university may have been taken with positive intentions, it is crucial that we, as stakeholders and ambassadors of the institution, collectively deliberate on the implications of this change. The renaming no doubt touches on issues of institutional heritage, alumni pride and the preservation of the University’s identity in its historical and national context.

In light of the above, I propose that the emergency congress meeting be convened at the earliest possible date to:

1.Provide a platform for members to express their opinions and concerns regarding the renaming.

2.Explore avenues for dialogue with relevant authorities, including the university administration and the Federal Government. 

3.Deliberate on a unified position and course of action to safeguard the interests and legacy of the University and its Alumni.

The unity and collective strength of the alumni association are paramount at this moment. I trust that the caretaker committee will act with urgency to address this pressing matter in the best interests of the institution and its stakeholders.
