A growing number of students have expressed frustration and uncertainty regarding the NELFUND loan program, an initiative designed to provide financial assistance to students in need. Despite applying for the loan while still in their 300-level, many students were surprised to discover this January that they had been paid their upkeep allowance, despite having already graduated.
The unexpected development has left many students bewildered, as they had anticipated receiving the loan as payment for their school fees while still enrolled. Instead, the upkeep allowance was disbursed, leading students to question the status of their loan and whether it had been paid out as school fees.
One student, who received the upkeep allowance of ₦20,000, expressed concern that their school fees had already been paid on their behalf, stating, "I don't know whether to pay my school fees myself or wait for NELFUND to clarify the situation, as time is running out."
The complaints highlight a lack of clarity and communication regarding the loan program's disbursement process, leaving students feeling anxious and uncertain about their financial situation. As the academic year progresses, it remains to be seen how NELFUND will address these concerns and ensure that students receive the financial support they need in a timely and transparent manner.
