In a bold move, student union leaders from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) have rejected the rice palliatives distributed by President Bola Tinubu. The leaders criticized the gesture, stating that it fails to address the fundamental challenges facing Nigerian students.
Damilola Isaac, SUG President at OAU, emphasized that his administration's focus remains on advocating for better educational standards and student welfare, rather than accepting "handouts that do not address the systemic challenges facing the Nigerian education sector."
Ibrahim Nazeer, President of the Students' Representative Council at ABU, also rejected the palliatives, stating that he would not accept his share unless it is accompanied by a substantial allocation for his fellow students.
The Nigerian government has been criticized for using rice distribution as a response to various crises, despite the country's worsening economic situation. With an annual inflation rate of 34.80% and food inflation at 38.94%, many are questioning the effectiveness of such palliatives.
Some students have also expressed concerns about the selective distribution of the palliatives, with only student leaders benefiting. Oyelakin Mutiullah, a student at the University of Abuja, noted that this approach "reflects poorly on leadership by both the government and the students' leaders."
