As a member of the Student Union Government of the University of Abuja, I'm compelled to sound the alarm on a pressing issue that threatens our very existence: food security. With the global spotlight on this critical concern, it's imperative we take proactive steps to safeguard our students' welfare. The recent statement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,on X a few minutes as he entered the green Chambers of the National Assembly for the presentation of the 2025 budget of restoration, "Food security is not negotiable," serves as a clarion call to action .
We must recognize that food insecurity is a ticking time bomb, and its consequences can be devastating. As students, we're not immune to the ripple effects of famine, which can lead to increased poverty, conflict, and even migration. It's our collective responsibility to ensure our institution remains a beacon of hope and stability.
To combat food insecurity, I urge our Student Union Government to hasten up and pass my new bill on food security and establish a Directorate of Food Security. This entity would bring together researchers, farmers, and stakeholders to develop innovative solutions, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and provide support to local farmers. By doing so, we'll not only enhance food availability but also foster economic growth and social cohesion.
As King Solomon wisely said in Ecclesiastes, "To everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." The time to act is now. We must seize this moment to make a meaningful impact on food security, not just for our students but for the broader community.
Let us unite and take concrete steps towards a food-secure future. We owe it to ourselves, our institution, and the world at large. The clock is ticking, and history will judge our actions. Let us rise to the challenge and make the University of Abuja a model for food security and sustainability.
