In a bold move to protect its students, the Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Abuja has established an anonymous committee to monitor and address fraudulent activities perpetrated by some departmental and faculty presidents.
Fraudulent Charges Exposed
An investigation revealed that certain faculty presidents have been collecting more than the approved ₦1,000 dues from freshers, adding unauthorized charges for items like T-shirts and ID cards, which have been banned by the school management.
Consequences for Perpetrators
The SUG has issued a stern warning, stating that anyone caught engaging in these fraudulent activities will face consequences from the security unit. Furthermore, the SUG has advised students who have already fallen victim to these scams to seek refunds.
Reporting Mechanism Established
To facilitate reporting and resolution, the SUG President has provided contact numbers for the Director of Welfare and the Provost. Students are encouraged to report any complaints or incidents to these authorities.
Cyber Cafe Extortion Halted
In addition, the SUG has warned cyber cafe operators to cease extorting freshers, urging students to report any such incidents immediately.
University's Stance
The Students Affairs and Safety Unit have reiterated the university's policy, requiring departments and faculties to obtain permission from the directorate before collecting any amount exceeding ₦1,000.
This decisive action by the University of Abuja's SUG demonstrates its commitment to protecting its students and maintaining a fair and transparent academic environment.
