The Student Union Government (SUG) president of the University of Abuja, Hon. Bashir Muhammad Abdullahi, has taken proactive steps to address the persistent shortage of keke (tricycles) on campus. For months, students have struggled to find transportation, but the president has been stationed at the school gate to ensure enough keke are available.
Keke operators have attributed the shortage to low fares, citing fuel costs and demanding an increase from ₦150 to ₦200. However, Hon. Bashir Abdullahi has rejected this proposal in a call with our correspondence, arguing that fuel prices have decreased since the last fare increase.
"We cannot increase the fare now, as it will only burden the students," Hon. Bashir Abdullahi said. "We must find alternative solutions to address the keke shortage."
The president also addressed the issue of "drop" – where a single student charters a keke, leaving others stranded. He cautioned students against this antisocial behavior, encouraging them to show empathy and share keke with their peers.
Hon. Bashir Abdullahi revealed that the SUG is collaborating with a campus-based company to introduce more vehicles and innovative solutions. He assured students that there will be no fare increase, emphasizing the union's commitment to their welfare.
"We are working tirelessly to ensure that our students have access to reliable and affordable transportation," President Abdullahi said. "We will not rest until this issue is resolved."
