A congress meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter, was abruptly adjourned on Thursday due to a leadership crisis and allegations of fraudulent employment.
The meeting, convened by branch chairman Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, aimed to discuss the outcome of the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Federal University of Technology, Minna. The NEC had condemned President Tinubu's decision to dissolve the UNIABUJA Governing Council and dismiss Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi.
Tensions escalated when a member of the G43 voiced support for the President's decision, sparking a heated debate. Despite attempts by two immediate past chairpersons of ASUU to defend the NEC's position, the meeting was adjourned due to the crisis.
The leadership crisis is linked to a petition by 43 professors, who expressed a loss of faith in the Governing Council. They accused the council of lacking integrity, competence, and fairness in selecting the university's substantive Vice Chancellor.
The situation remains unresolved, with the university community awaiting further developments.
