Abuja, March 10, 2025 – In a heartwarming display of gratitude and unity, the 400-level students of the Guidance and Counselling Department at the University of Abuja took center stage today to celebrate two remarkable women who have been pillars of support in their academic journey. The event, held to commemorate International Women’s Day, saw the students pay tribute to their Head of Department, Dr. Victoria O. Adikwu, and the Examination Officer, Dr. Olubunmi Ojji, for their unwavering dedication and maternal care.
The celebration, organized entirely by the students, was a testament to the core tenets of guidance and counselling—empathy, support, and appreciation. Under the theme of honoring women who inspire and nurture, the students transformed the department into a festive hub, adorned with colorful decorations, heartfelt messages, and tokens of appreciation for the two academic stalwarts. It was a poignant reminder of the power of gratitude, a value deeply ingrained in the discipline these students are passionately pursuing.
Dr. Victoria Adikwu, fondly described by her students as a “mummy” was the first to be celebrated. Known for her open-door policy and tireless efforts to guide both the academic and personal growth of her students, she has become a beacon of inspiration within the department. The students presented her with gifts, including a beautifully crafted plaque and a bouquet of flowers, as a symbol of their deep respect and admiration.
In her response, Dr. Adikwu delivered what many described as a “mouthwatering” speech that left the room buzzing with emotion. Visibly moved by the gesture, she expressed her profound appreciation, saying, “I am overwhelmed by this love and recognition. You, my students, are my pride and joy. To be celebrated as a mother and a mentor today is the greatest honor I could ever receive.” Her words, dripping with sincerity, underscored the mutual bond between her and the students, reinforcing her role as not just an academic leader but a nurturing figure in their lives.
The celebration didn’t stop there. The students also turned their attention to Dr. Olubunmi Ojji, the department’s Examination Officer, who has earned a reputation for standing by the students through thick and thin. Whether it’s assisting with exam preparations, addressing concerns, or simply offering a listening ear, Dr. Ojji has been a constant presence, ensuring no student feels left behind. The students honored her with a personalized gift and a resounding round of applause, acknowledging her as a steadfast ally and a maternal force in the department.
Speaking on behalf of his peers, 400-level student Okoro Victor shared the motivation behind the event. “International Women’s Day is about celebrating women who make a difference, and for us, Dr. Adikwu and Dr. Ojji are those women. They don’t just teach us; they guide us, they care for us, and they make us better. We wanted to say thank you in a way that shows how much they mean to us.”
The event concluded with a shared meal, laughter, and reflections on the invaluable role women play in shaping lives—a fitting tribute on a day dedicated to recognizing women’s contributions globally. For the Guidance and Counselling students of the University of Abuja, this celebration was more than just an event; it was a living example of the principles they study and aspire to embody in their future careers.
As the sun set on this memorable day, the message was clear: in the heart of Nigeria’s capital, a group of passionate students had not only honored their academic “mothers” but also set a shining example of gratitude and community for all to see.
