A Faulty Foundation: The Crumbling Credibility of Jamo Movement at Yakubu Gowon University

At Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, the student body stands at a crossroads. As the Student Union Government (SUG) elections loom, a mere five days away, the integrity of one campaign movement has come under sharp scrutiny. The Jamo Movement, led by a candidate vying for the coveted SUG presidency, has been caught in a web of deceit that threatens to unravel not just their campaign but the trust of the entire student community. If a foundation is faulty, the end result is destined to be a puff of smoke, a fleeting illusion of promise that collapses under the weight of disdain. This is the story of a lie that has exposed the fragility of a movement and the urgent need for students to demand better.

It began with a bold claim. The Jamo Movement, in a bid to sway voters, took credit for a high-profile MTN Nigeria event hosted on our campus. They branded it as "powered by Jamo Movement," a feather in their cap meant to showcase their influence and organizational prowess. Posters circulated, social media buzzed, and the campaign team leaned heavily into this narrative, positioning their candidate—a well-known student union leader and graphic designer—as the mastermind behind the event. For a moment, it seemed like a winning strategy. After all, who wouldn’t want a leader capable of bringing such a prestigious event to Yakubu Gowon University?

But the truth, as it often does, came to light. Just today, MTN Nigeria clarified that the event had no connection to any campaign organization, least of all Jamo Movement. The revelation was a slap in the face to every student who believed in the promise of transparent leadership. The Jamo Movement’s claim was not a mere exaggeration—it was a deliberate lie, a calculated attempt to deceive the student body for electoral gain. This was not a mistake; it was a betrayal.

No wonder they call it a "movement." The term may sound familiar, even alluring, but it bears no resemblance to the intellectual unionism we aspire to at Yakubu Gowon University. A movement built on falsehoods is no movement at all—it is a den of opportunists, scrambling for power by any means necessary. How can a candidate who lies so brazenly, so close to the election, be trusted to uphold the sacred responsibilities of the SUG presidency? How can a campaign that thrives on deception claim to represent the interests of a student body that deserves honesty, integrity, and accountability?

The involvement of a popular student union leader and graphic designer in this scandal only deepens the wound. This is someone who should understand the power of truth in leadership, someone whose creativity should inspire trust, not manipulate it. Yet, they aided and abetted this impunity, tarnishing their own reputation and dragging the student union’s name through the mud. If this is the foundation of Jamo Movement, what can we expect from its future? A house built on lies will always crumble, leaving nothing but disdain in its wake.

To the students of Yakubu Gowon University, this is a wake-up call. We cannot afford to be swayed by cheap gerrymandering or flashy promises. The SUG presidency is not a prize to be won through deceit; it is a mantle of responsibility that demands a truthful voice and clean hands. As the adage goes, he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. Jamo Movement has shown us their hands, and they are stained with lies.

We must rise above the gimmicks of those who recycle the same tired tactics, cloaked in new slogans. A healthy Student Union Government is not built on fleeting movements but on a lifestyle of integrity, accountability, and service. We deserve a leader who speaks with honesty, not one who peddles falsehoods to steal our votes.

In this election, one candidate stands out as a beacon of hope amidst the fog of deception. Korede Royalty has consistently demonstrated the qualities we need in an SUG president: transparency, dedication, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of our union. While others scramble to claim unearned victories, Korede Royalty offers a vision rooted in truth—a foundation strong enough to build a better future for Yakubu Gowon University.

As we approach the polls, let us vote lies out and integrity in. Let us reject the puff of smoke that is Jamo Movement and embrace a leadership that will stand the test of time. Our union deserves nothing less.
