In a remarkable and unannounced visit to the Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as University of Abuja in 2014/2015, Hon. Pelumi Olajengbesi Esq,the institution’s former president set a new benchmark for alumni engagement during the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election manifesto at the university’s convocation ground. The visit, marked by a warm reception from students and faculty, underscored his commitment to revitalizing the university and restoring its student union to global standards.

Taking the stage, the former president passionately outlined his vision to “bring the world to the University of Abuja” by supporting the revival of the SUG. His address resonated with the audience, who applauded his dedication to fostering a vibrant student community.

Addressing a long-standing issue, he expressed deep concern over the deplorable state of the university’s toilet facilities, which have been a recurring subject of media scrutiny. Declaring the situation a “state of emergency,” he pledged to fund the immediate renovation of toilets across various faculties, a decision hailed as a “square peg in a square hole” by students and observers alike.

Further demonstrating his commitment, the former president promised the construction of boreholes at the two main male hostels to address the persistent water scarcity plaguing the institution. This announcement was met with widespread approval, as water shortages have long hindered student life on campus.

Comrade Korede Royalty, a prominent student leader, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the alumnus’s unprecedented generosity. She also appealed for the inclusion of the female hostels in the borehole project, a request that received nods of approval from the crowd.

“This is truly the sweetest gesture an alumnus has ever made to their alma mater,” said a student representative, reflecting the collective sentiment. However, the former president took a moment to address detractors, urging interfering alumni who undermine such positive initiatives to refrain from disrupting the SUG election process.

The visit has sparked renewed hope among students and faculty, who see it as a turning point for the University of Abuja. The former president’s pledges signal a brighter future for the institution, setting a precedent for alumni to actively contribute to their alma mater’s growth and development.

As the university community awaits the fulfillment of these promises, the former president’s actions have already cemented his legacy as a visionary leader dedicated to the progress of Yakubu Gowon University.
