UniAbuja Receives OPay CSR Empowerment, Dean Presents Portraits to Acting Vice-Chancellor

The University of Abuja has continued to record remarkable achievements in student development and external partnerships, following the disbursement of the OPay Scholarship Fund for tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Representing the University at the official disbursement ceremony in Lagos, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Idoko Sunday Idoko, joined other university delegates nationwide as OPay Digital Services Limited awarded scholarships worth ₦126 million to 420 students from 20 tertiary institutions.
Upon his return to campus, Dr. Idoko, today being Monday paid a courtesy visit to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Matthew Adamu, to formally present the OPay portrait to the University management. During the visit, the Dean also delivered a detailed feedback report from the Lagos event and expressed appreciation for the support of the University leadership in fostering student-centered initiatives.
The scholarship programme is part of OPay’s N1.2 billion 10-year Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at promoting education, digital literacy, and youth empowerment.
Speaking during the Lagos event themed “OPay Corporate Social Responsibility: Empowering Futures 2025,” OPay’s Executive Director and Chief Commercial Officer, Elizabeth Wang, announced that the company had successfully completed the first phase of its 10-year CSR plan.
According to her, OPay has disbursed ₦126 million to 420 students from 20 tertiary institutions across Nigeria, including the University of Abuja, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Benue State University, Nasarawa State University, and others.
Wang reaffirmed the company’s long-term vision to invest at least ₦120 million annually in scholarships over the next decade, noting that “students are the future, and education remains the foundation of every nation’s progress.”
In addition to the scholarship initiative, OPay announced a strategic partnership with the University of Calabar to establish a Cybersecurity Laboratory, designed to boost digital resilience and technology-driven education.
Wang explained that OPay’s experts will visit the University of Calabar annually to provide lectures and training sessions on emerging trends in cybersecurity and financial technology.
She emphasized that the company’s CSR commitment goes beyond financial inclusion — it also focuses on capacity building, knowledge transfer, and preparing Nigerian students for the global digital economy.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Matthew Adamu, commended OPay for its generous investment in education and expressed gratitude to the company for recognizing the University of Abuja among the benefiting institutions.
He further appreciated Dr. Idoko for his proactive leadership in representing the University and reaffirmed management’s readiness to deepen partnerships that empower students.
“We are proud of this milestone,” Prof. Adamu said. “The OPay scholarship aligns perfectly with our vision to produce graduates who are globally competitive, digitally skilled, and socially responsible.”
The OPay scholarship initiative, launched in 2023, is designed to promote access to education, support outstanding students, and strengthen digital literacy in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The programme reflects OPay’s ongoing commitment to social impact, inclusivity, and technological advancement in higher education.
