The Hall Administrator of the Old Girls’ Hostel, University of Abuja Main Campus, Mrs. Mary has announced a new set of measures aimed at improving discipline, safety, and general welfare within the hostel. She made these revelations during an exclusive interview with our reporter yesterday, where she also confirmed that the hostel has just concluded its first-ever official orientation for all legal occupants.

According to her, the orientation was organized to ensure that every resident clearly understands the rules and expectations governing hostel life. She described it as a necessary step towards “restoring order, strengthening security, and promoting a healthy living environment.”

One of the major highlights of the briefing was the administration’s firm stand against hostel squatting, a long-standing practice among students in which legally allocated residents secretly accommodate friends. The hall administrator stated unequivocally that squatting will not be tolerated this session, emphasizing that the practice causes overcrowding, strains facilities, and poses security risks.

She further stressed that selling or peddling of hostel spaces, a trend that has gained notoriety in recent years, remains strictly prohibited. Any student caught engaging in such acts, she warned, will face disciplinary action as stipulated by hostel regulations.

In response to emerging national security concerns, the hostel leadership has also introduced a new safety protocol: the hostel’s main gate will now be locked at exactly 12 midnight. She explained that this policy is designed to ensure better control of movement and to safeguard students during late hours.

During the orientation, the administrator acknowledged the contributions of the former Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Idoko Sunday Idoko, whom she praised for his “tremendous work” in renovating sections of the hostel. She expressed optimism that the Director of Works and Maintenance, Engr. Joshua will complete the remaining aspects of the renovation to further improve students’ living conditions.

Despite the challenges, she expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the hostel residents this semester. With a smile, she noted that she has received no major complaints of sickness or disturbances, a development she attributed to both the good behavior of the students and the grace of God.

The Old Girls’ Hostel is expected to continue implementing these new rules as part of a broader mission to enhance safety, discipline, and comfort for all its occupants.
