The carpenter is always accused of not having a chair at his home, this truth was proved today during an environmental walk carried out today by "The It begins with me campaign" stakeholders at the faculty of education,as the Mother Faculty which was supposed to be at the forefront of a better learning environment turned out to be less concerned about her environment even though 67% of her students projects evolves around climatic change and environmental protection.
Prof. Bassey Mbon, the founder of Environmental sanitation Vanguard, a student union that was launched on the 1st day of November, 2023, advised the students to curb the menace of plastic waste without delay and also encouraged the Environmental sanitation Vanguard stakeholders to hastily engage in the "It begins with me campaign".
He said this has become necessary to avoid, impending soil and water pollution which may result in a threat to wildlife and worsening climate change in the UofA.
Let's not forget that greenhouses gas emissions have been linked to the life cycle of plastics with varied impacts on biodiversity and human health through exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Vis-à-vis, the world has become so involved with plastics that around 430 million tonnes are produced in a year, so it's regretting that most of the plastics become waste and have devastating effects on the ecosystem, wildlife, health and well-being of humans, and the state of Mother Faculty's look demands an urgent attention.
As a concerned student who demands a change and the propounder of "The it begins with me campaign", I urge the students union government,Nuesa executives, and all departmental executives and patriotic students of Nuesa to take necessary steps to curb the menace of plastic waste. This warning comes as a result that this pollution can alter natural processes and reduce the ecosystem’s ability to adapt to climate change.
Also, regulations must be put in place to support the transition of plastics, especially on the part of the shops around the school who fail to provide waste bin for their student customers.
Yes, people should start to look for how to eliminate the plastics they do not need and we must have access to waste bin at all locations.
Plastics are mostly synthetic materials made from polymers. You can get plastics from fossil fuels. We use plastic in our day-to-day life in our lecture halls, offices, homes, devices, components of equipment, clothes and even as gift items at parties and around the school. It is relatively cheap to produce, it is durable, flexible and easy to transport. Unfortunately, the world is only seeing the Macro plastics and not the microplastics which are tiny fragments polluting our soil, and water supplies and eventually get into our bodies.
“Greenhouse gas emissions have been linked to the life cycle of plastics with varied impacts on biodiversity and human health through exposure to hazardous chemicals. According to the UN, the plastic pollution crisis stems from the fact that plastic is currently produced, used and discarded. The use is often just once.
The school management, student union and the Nuesa executives must invest in educating the public and create awareness on the menace of plastic pollution and its repercussions.
It is also the duty of the Environmental sanitation Vanguard ambassadors in educating the public and creating awareness of the menace of plastic pollution and its repercussions.
In line with the Sustainable Development Goal 17 and the "IT BEGINS WITH ME CAMPAIGN ".
UofA needs to take action to ensure that after we've enjoyed the content of containers, we don’t liter the environment.
This morning when I came into the school with my water,I was prompt to consciously walk from the bike stand to the Dean's Office which had the nearest waste bin, so as to dispose the plastic properly because I understand that plastic is not bad but the way it is used causes environmental problems.
Every package that has been used has a place; it can be re-used. Our waste is a resource. I am interested because I've learnt from beverages company. They are known for happiness. The wastes that fill our environment can be re-used and re-cycled to repackage another beverage. 100 per cent of our packaging materials are recyclable. We must pay attention to how waste is collected and re-cycled.
“This is a fundamental approach to change our environment. In the Sustainable developmenrt Goal (SDG) 17, partnership is a very fundamental step in achieving a sustainable goal. Therefore, we can achieve zero waste in UofA through this partnership.”
I implored the students to take the message to their homes and classrooms, as well as volunteer as recycling ambassadors,"It begins with me".
