In a move to honor the legacy of Nigeria's former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, the Nigerian Government has renamed the University of Abuja after him. As of now, the institution will be known as Yakubu Gowon University.
This development was announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shortly after the last Federal Executive Council meeting for the year 2024, chaired by President Bola Tinubu. According to Idris, the decision was made in recognition of Gowon's enormous contribution to nation-building.
Gowon, a Nigerian nationalist and believer in the unity and oneness of Nigeria, played a crucial role in the country's history, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War. His leadership and famous "no victor, no vanquished" speech helped promote healing and reconciliation after the war.
This renaming is a testament to Gowon's enduring legacy and his commitment to Nigeria's development.
