My fellow students, today is a momentous day, a day that will be etched in the annals of our great nation's history. The renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University is a testament to our nation's commitment to unity, reconciliation, and excellence.
This article was initially published on December 16th, 2024.
Yakubu Gowon, a true Nigerian patriot, is the best choice to have his name immortalized as the University of National Unity. His leadership during the Nigerian Civil War and his famous "no victor, no vanquished" speech promoted healing and reconciliation, setting the tone for our nation's journey towards unity and progress.
This decision is a square peg in a square hole, a perfect fit that reflects our nation's values and aspirations. It is a big flex to be a Gowon University Student, to be part of an institution that embodies the spirit of national unity and excellence.
The student union government community is ecstatic about this development, and rightly so. This renaming is a testament to the power of unity and reconciliation, values that are dear to our hearts.
We are the best university in Nigeria, not just because of our academic excellence, but because of our commitment to national unity and social justice. Our name, Yakubu Gowon University, is a fulfillment of the National Policy on Education (NPE) 2004, which emphasizes the importance of national unity, social justice, and cultural heritage.
Today is a historic day, a day that will be remembered for generations to come. It is a day that marks a new chapter in our journey towards excellence and national unity.
I must say, I am not surprised by this development. In fact, I prophesied it in my article yesterday, titled "The World Ranking System: A Biased Measure of Excellence." This renaming is a prophecy fulfilled, a testament to our nation's commitment to excellence and national unity.
We represent excellence, my friends, and this renaming is a celebration of that excellence. We are the standard-bearers of national unity, and we will continue to uphold the values that have made our nation great.
So let us rejoice, my fellow Nigerians, let us celebrate this momentous occasion. Let us honor the legacy of Yakubu Gowon, a true Nigerian patriot, and let us continue to strive for excellence and national unity.
