In a statement released earlier today on his status, the Student Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Abuja,Hon. Bashir Abdullahi has called for calm and restraint amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the proposed change of name to Yakubu Gowon University.
The SUG President, in a bid to address the concerns of students and stakeholders, reassured that the Union is fully committed to opposing the name change and is exploring all available channels to ensure that the institution's identity remains intact.
"I want to assure our students that we are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to prevent this name change," the SUG President stated. "We have issued a memo, utilized media platforms, and are currently running an e-petition, all in a bid to make our voices heard."
The SUG President also advised students to continue signing the petition, emphasizing that every signature counts in the fight to preserve the institution's name.
While acknowledging the passion and commitment of students to the cause, the SUG President cautioned against any form of rash or unplanned action, emphasizing the need for a coordinated and intellectual approach to addressing the issue.
"We appreciate everyone's concern and commitment to our common stance, but we must do things properly to achieve success," the SUG President emphasized. "We will engage in peaceful demonstrations when the time is right, but for now, let us focus on signing the petition and exploring all available avenues to prevent this name change."
