The sheer audacity of some politicians never ceases to amaze me. Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has been ordered to be remanded in Kuje correctional centre until January 29, 2025. And why, you ask? Allegedly, he embezzled a staggering 110.4 billion naira, equivalent to the 2021 budget of Kogi State.

Let that sink in for a moment. This is a man who was entrusted with the welfare of his people, and yet he allegedly stole from them with reckless abandon. And to make matters worse, Kogi State is one of the poorest states in Nigeria, with a high number of casualties from flooding every year.

But Bello's atrocities don't stop there. He wasn't even elected in his first term, emerging as governor after the APC flag bearer died just days before inauguration. And now, he's facing allegations of embezzling billions of naira. It's a slap in the face to the people of Kogi State, who deserve so much better.

The question on everyone's mind is, how could someone steal so much money from their own people? It's a staggering amount, equivalent to the entire budget of the state. And what's even more galling is that Bello is still walking free, despite the allegations against him.

But finally, justice seems to be catching up with him. The court's decision to remand him in Kuje correctional centre is a step in the right direction. Let's hope that this marks the beginning of the end of Bello's reign of impunity.

As I always say, you can't have a functioning democracy without accountability. And it's high time that our politicians were held accountable for their actions. So, let's keep a close eye on this case and ensure that justice is served.
