The honest truth, my friends, is that the attempt to rename the University of Lagos after MKO Abiola failed because of the PDP-led government's insincere motives. The family, disciples of MKO, and the NADECO group rejected the renaming because it didn't meet their demands, which included acknowledging MKO's election, changing Democracy Day to June 12, awarding him the GCFR posthumously, and naming the national stadium in Abuja after him, these demands were immediately honoured by President Muhammadu Buhari. He awarded MKO with GCFR, and his Vice Alhaji Kingibe with GCON, acknowledged their presidency, and named national stadium Abuja after him.
Now, let's fast-forward to the present. President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Abuja after Yakubu Gowon, and I must say, it's a well-deserved honor. Gowon's contributions to Nigeria's unity and development are undeniable. As a student of history, I can tell you that Gowon's leadership during the Nigerian Civil War and his famous "no victor, no vanquished" speech promoted healing and reconciliation.
To those who are opposing the renaming, I say, let's not misconstrue history. Yakubu Gowon is a Nigerian patriot who deserves to be honored. And President Tinubu deserves accolades for recognizing Gowon's contributions to our nation's development.
My Giants and Saints of Aso Rock, let us not resist this noble idea of renaming the University of Abuja after Yakubu Gowon. It is a well-deserved honor, and a fitting tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to the service of our great nation.
And let us not forget, even Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, has started changing its narrative to reflect this new development. This is a clear indication that the world is taking notice of this significant event, and we should not be left behind.
So, let us embrace this change, and celebrate the legacy of Yakubu Gowon. Let us honor his contributions to our nation's development, and recognize his commitment to national unity and reconciliation.
So, let's celebrate this momentous occasion and honor the legacy of Yakubu Gowon. God bless Nigeria!
