My fellow Nigerians, I stand before you today, inspired by the courage and resilience of the American people, who have just witnessed a government shutdown due to the failure of their lawmakers to pass the 2025 budget bill.
This shutdown, my friends, is not just a result of partisan politics, but a testament to the power of the people, who have risen up to demand accountability from their leaders. Influencers like Elon Musk, who introduced the department of government efficiency, and pressure groups, who utilized social media platforms to mobilize public opinion, have shown us that even the most entrenched systems can be challenged.
But, my fellow Nigerians, as we watch these events unfold in America, we must also reflect on our own situation. Just recently, our presidency announced the postponement of the budget and just within 24-hours, cooked up another big budget, without giving our lawmakers sufficient time to read and study the bill. And yet, these same lawmakers had the audacity to sing "on your mandate we shall stand" for the president, after passing a bill they never read.
This, my friends, is a shameful display of rubber-stamp politics, where our lawmakers prioritize loyalty to the president over their constitutional duty to represent the people. And what about our pressure groups? Are they not complicit in this charade, more interested in lobbying for Christmas rice or debating election outcomes, than in holding our leaders accountable?
We must learn from the American example, my friends. We must start setting up spaces on social media to talk about the people in government and solutions. We must demand more from our lawmakers and hold them accountable for their actions. We must not be afraid to challenge the status quo and fight for a better Nigeria.
So, let us rise up, my fellow Nigerians, and take inspiration from the American people. Let us demand a better future for ourselves and for our children. Let us show our lawmakers that we will no longer tolerate their negligence and incompetence. Together, we can build a Nigeria that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people.
We will write, we will register our voice until vox populi, vox dei
