ABUJA, Nigeria - The University of Abuja has been plagued by a shortage of tricycle operators, leaving students to trek long distances to and from campus. However, an investigation by our correspondence has revealed that the solution to this problem may be simpler than expected.
According to tricycle operators, the current fare of ₦150 is no longer sustainable due to the high cost of fuel and maintenance. As a result, many operators have abandoned the university route in search of more lucrative opportunities, though most operators returned to work this week because of the pressures coming from the amiable head of transport unit and the egalitarian SUG president.
However, the tricycle operators' union has indicated that most of the operators that left because of the unfavourable conditions are willing to return to the university route if the fare is reviewed to at least ₦200. This would provide them with a fair income and enable them to continue providing transportation services to students.
Students, who are already feeling the pinch of the transportation shortage, have expressed willingness to pay the increased fare. "We just want a reliable transportation system," said one student. "If paying ₦200 means we can get to and from campus safely and easily, then it's worth it."
The university administration has yet to comment on the issue, but it is clear that reviewing the fare is a simple and effective solution to the transportation woes. By increasing the fare to a sustainable level, the university can ensure that students have access to reliable and safe transportation, and that tricycle operators can continue to provide their services.
