Today's announcement by President Bola Tinubu that Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been relieved of her duty as Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja has left many questioning the motivations behind this decision. What's even more astonishing is that despite the name change to Yakubu Gowon University not being effected in law, the President's aide and several media outlets are already referring to the institution by its new name.
This raises several concerns, not least of which is the legality of the name change. As it stands, the University of Abuja Act has not been amended since 2006, and until that happens, the name change remains unofficial.
Students and staff are now wondering if Professor Maikudi's removal is connected to her decision to matriculate students under the existing university name, which is still the legally recognized name. Or is it related to the controversies surrounding her appointment as substantive Vice Chancellor?
The timing of the announcement, coming on the heels of the matriculation ceremony, has sparked speculation about the President's motives. Was Professor Maikudi's commitment to upholding the law and maintaining the university's existing name seen as an act of defiance? Or was her removal a response to the ongoing controversies about her leadership?
Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: the University of Abuja community deserves answers. As the dust settles, students, staff, and faculty members will be watching closely to see how this development unfolds.
