As I stepped onto the University of Abuja main campus tonight, I couldn't help but notice the somber mood that had settled over the student body. The usual vibrancy and energy that characterized the institution were noticeably absent, replaced by a sense of loss and longing.
During a chance encounter with the Student Union Government (SUG) Vice President, Hon. Falalu Asma'u, at a popular campus joint, Mardiya, I inquired about the source of the students' despair. Her response was a poignant reminder of the impact that former Vice Chancellor Professor Aisha Maikudi had on the university community.
Professor Maikudi's tenure was marked by her unwavering commitment to listening to the voices of students. She was unafraid to engage in open and honest dialogue with the student union government and other associations, always willing to lend a sympathetic ear to their concerns.
One notable instance of her dedication to the students was her prompt response to the outcry over increased school fees and other levies. Following a simple phone call, the contentious policies were reversed, demonstrating her willingness to prioritize the welfare of the students.
Under her leadership, the university enjoys a period of unprecedented stability, including a reliable 24-hour electricity supply. This was a testament to her tireless efforts to create a conducive learning environment.
As I looked around the campus, it was clear that Professor Maikudi's departure had left a void in the hearts of the students. The question on everyone's lips was: "Will we ever find another VC like Prof. Aisha?"
The University of Abuja community continues to mourn the sack of a leader who truly cared for her students. As we move forward, we can only hope that her legacy will inspire future leaders to emulate her exceptional dedication and compassion.
