Professor Chris Piwuna, a distinguished consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, has been elected President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The election occurred during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday in Benin City.

Piwuna emerged victorious in a competitive race against Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

He succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, who has led the union through a tumultuous period marked by strikes and negotiations with the federal government.

As a seasoned academic and administrator at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Piwuna brings a wealth of experience to the role. His election signals ASUU’s continued push for improved funding for universities, better welfare for lecturers, and autonomy for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The congress, attended by delegates from universities nationwide, also addressed pressing issues facing the education sector, including unresolved agreements with the government. Piwuna’s leadership will be closely watched as ASUU navigates these challenges in the coming years.
