In a demonstration of commitment to student welfare, the University of Abuja Students Union Government (SUG), led by its Chairman Inter-faculty Affairs, supervised the renovation of the university’s shuttle ground on Sunday, May 11, 2025, despite the Chairman’s personal reservations about working on a Sunday. The shuttle ground, a critical transportation hub used by approximately 90% of the university’s students, had fallen into disrepair, posing challenges, especially during the rainy season.
Sen. Ifesinachi Donald Udoka, speaking passionately about the initiative, emphasized the committee's role as servant leaders dedicated to tangible action. “Though I don’t support working on a Sunday, my love for the welfare of our students compelled me to be out here with my team yesterday, ensuring the smooth renovation of the shuttle ground,” the president stated. “Our unionism is about showing results, not just posing for pictures.”
The renovation project gained momentum following the proactive intervention of the university’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patricia Manko Lar, and the Director of Transport, Architect Amdii-Zaguru. Their administration promptly responded to the SUG Chairman Inter-faculty Affair’s appeal, addressing the long-neglected state of the shuttle ground. “We are grateful for the responsive leadership of Professor Lar and Architect Amdii-Zaguru, who acted swiftly upon seeing our letter,” the Sen. Ifesinachi Donald added.
The shuttle ground’s poor condition had been a persistent concern for students, particularly during adverse weather, when navigating the area became hazardous. The ongoing renovations aim to restore the facility, ensuring safer and more reliable transportation for the university community.
Professor Lar, appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor in February 2025, has been lauded for her eforts to stabilize and transform the institution, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University. Her administration’s support for this project underscores her commitment to addressing critical infrastructure challenges.
The SUG’s hands-on approach and the administration’s swift response have been met with optimism among students, who hope the revitalized shuttle ground will significantly improve their daily commuting experience. The union reiterated its dedication to prioritizing impactful projects that directly benefit the student body, signaling a new era of proactive student leadership at the university.
