In a bid to foster a more inclusive and responsive academic environment, the University of Abuja's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, convened a town hall meeting with the directorate of student affairs today, January 13, 2025 at the faculty of Agriculture theatre hall. The event drew a diverse range of attendees, including students, faculty members, and administrative officials.
During the meeting, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Umar Kari, urged students to seize the opportunity to express their grievances and concerns to the management. Prof. Maikudi acknowledged the university's financial struggles, revealing that the 11 million naira allocation from the federal government is insufficient to sustain the institution. Despite these challenges, she assured students that their safety and welfare remain a top priority.
The Vice Chancellor also solicited suggestions from students on how to boost the university's internally generated revenue (IGR). Additionally, she announced plans to upgrade the Department of Geography to a full-fledged faculty, pending final approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Prof. Maikudi addressed various student concerns, including hostel accommodation shortages, while stating her administrations plans to build more hostels. She also stressed on the need for students to adapt to the academic calendar. She cautioned that the calendar will not be adjusted due to time lost during the holidays and the impending ASUU strike.
In a call to action, the Vice Chancellor urged students to collaborate with the management to address the institution's challenges. The town hall meeting marked a significant step towards fostering a more collaborative and responsive academic community at the University of Abuja.
