In a recent address,at the townhall meeting organised by the University of Abuja vice Chancellor, the Director of the Safety Unit, Barr. Abdullahi Burga, clarified the rationale behind the security screening of students during elections. Burga emphasized that the screening is not intended to intimidate students, but rather to ensure that individuals with questionable past records are not entrusted with leadership roles.
"We conduct security screenings to prevent 'bad eggs' from entering politics and to verify students' past records before granting them leadership positions," Burga explained. He also addressed concerns regarding the dismantling of illegal shops and occupants at the ETF wing, stating that this measure aims to enhance student security.
Barr. Burga noted that unregistered associations have been taking advantage of management benefits, encroaching on university land and shops without proper registration. The university recognizes only three registered religious bodies, which have been allocated designated building .
This clarification comes in response to questions raised by students, Comr. Julius Temitope, who inquired about the relocation of Christian groups from their original locations at ETF. The Director of Safety unit assured that the locations will be reviewed to accommodate more associations.
In a separate plea, Comr. Morakinyo requested that lawyers be involved in the security screening process to prevent intimidation. Barr. Burga's assurance aims to alleviate concerns and promote a secure and fair electoral process.
